Gus Lindqvist is forty-seven and drives a refrigerated trailer between Omaha and Denver four nights a week. He can back fifty-three feet of reefer into a loading dock with a foot and a half to spare on either side, in sleet, without climbing down to look. At his niece's birthday dinner, his sister Rita, a nurse in Lincoln, wrote Super Aloe 450 Ortho Molecular on the back of a pharmacy receipt and slid it across the table.

The receipt is still folded into his sun visor. Truck-stop food, six-hour stretches in the seat and a body clock that no longer knows what day it is leave him backed up for two or three days on most runs, and then fine again once he's home. He hasn't ordered the bottle. He half-remembers Rita saying something about not taking it every night, and he honestly can't tell whether Cape aloe is the same thing as the aloe juice sitting in the grocery store cooler.

Super Aloe 450 Ortho Molecular is a single-ingredient capsule containing 450 mg of Cape aloe (Aloe ferox), a concentrated botanical source of compounds called anthraquinone glycosides. Ortho Molecular states that it is intended for the relief of occasional constipation and that it supports gastrointestinal function and bowel regularity. The label dose is 1 capsule at bedtime, allowing 24 hours before taking another, or as recommended by your health care professional. It is for occasional use only and must not be used during pregnancy. It suits adults whose regularity goes off track now and then because of travel, a changed schedule or a change in diet, not people who need help every day. Each bottle holds 100 capsules, made without gluten, corn, yeast, or artificial colors and flavors.

What is Super Aloe 450 Ortho Molecular?

It is Cape aloe and nothing else. The supplement facts panel for Super Aloe 450 Ortho Molecular lists one active ingredient, 450 mg of Cape aloe per capsule, and two other ingredients: the vegetable capsule and magnesium stearate. There is no senna, no cascara, no magnesium citrate, and no fiber blend sitting behind it. Ortho Molecular files it under gastrointestinal health and lists two clinical applications: supports gastrointestinal function, and supports bowel regularity.

The manufacturer describes Cape aloe as the solid residue left after evaporating the liquid from Aloe ferox leaves. That detail matters more than it looks, because it answers the question Gus can't. Cape aloe is not aloe vera gel and it is not aloe juice.

An aloe leaf has two very different parts. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health explains that aloe products can be made from the gel of the inner leaf, the latex from the leaf's outer layer, or the whole crushed leaf, and that many commercial whole-leaf products are decolorized with activated carbon to strip out their anthraquinones. The drinkable aloe in a grocery cooler is usually built to contain as little of those compounds as possible. Cape aloe is valued for exactly the compounds the juice makers remove. The two products are not interchangeable in either direction: aloe juice won't do what Super Aloe does, and Super Aloe is not a daily wellness drink.

Ortho Molecular is a practitioner-channel company. Its formulas are sold through licensed health care professionals rather than grocery shelves, and at Covenant this one is a clinic-access product, so you register (free) before ordering. The brand also publishes a product information sheet for Super Aloe that is unusually candid. It says, in its own words, that aloe preparations have been in the United States Pharmacopoeia for more than 100 years "despite the lack of published studies." You don't often see a manufacturer write that sentence about its own ingredient.

Super Aloe comes in two strengths, 250 mg and 450 mg, and the 450 is also sold in blister packs. Ortho Molecular frames the two potencies as a way to tailor the dose to the person.

What is in Super Aloe 450, and how does Cape aloe work?

Cape aloe (Aloe ferox): 450 mg per capsule

The active compounds in Cape aloe are anthraquinone glycosides. Barbaloin, also called aloin, is the best-known of them. A glycoside is a molecule with a sugar attached, and that sugar is the reason Cape aloe works the way it does. In its glycoside form the compound stays largely inactive until it meets the right bacteria in the large intestine.

Step one: gut bacteria switch it on

Ortho Molecular states that these compounds are activated through bacterial metabolism in the gut. That is not marketing shorthand. A study the manufacturer cites found that a bacterium isolated from the human intestine converts barbaloin into aloe-emodin anthrone, and that the laxative effect seen in rats depended on that conversion.

Two practical consequences follow. Super Aloe is not instant, because the capsule has to reach the large intestine, where those bacteria live, before anything happens. And the response can vary from person to person, since everyone's gut bacteria are a little different. Both points explain the bedtime timing on the label.

Step two: more water held in the stool

Once activated, the compounds promote what Ortho Molecular calls active chloride secretion in the colon. Water follows chloride. The result, per the manufacturer, is more water and electrolyte content in the stool, which makes it softer and easier to pass. Ortho Molecular also points to a 2010 study in which an Aloe ferox leaf extract was tested in rats with drug-induced constipation, citing it for stool-softening effects. It is an animal study, and it should be read as one.

Step three: the large intestine starts moving

The third action is on peristalsis, the wave-like muscle contractions that move contents through the large intestine. Ortho Molecular says Cape aloe triggers the colon to contract, which speeds up intestinal passage. This is the part that does most of the work for someone like Gus, whose problem is a colon that has slowed down from sitting still and eating at odd hours.

Put plainly, that combination of softer stool and stimulated movement is how stimulant-type botanical laxatives work. The manufacturer's own word for Super Aloe's purpose is "relief of occasional constipation," and you should take it as that. Some customer reviews describe it as "not a laxative." Functionally, it is one, and that is the reason for every caution on the label.

Who should take Super Aloe 450?

The manufacturer's suggested use describes adults with occasional constipation. In practice, the people it suits look something like this:

  • Frequent travelers whose bowels go quiet for a couple of days on the road and return to normal at home
  • Someone who has had a short disruption, such as a week of hospital-cafeteria food while visiting a parent, a move, or a holiday stretch of rich meals
  • Adults who have already tried more water, more fiber and more walking for an occasional slow spell, and want something for the nights when that hasn't been enough
  • People who prefer one botanical ingredient to a multi-herb laxative blend, and want to know exactly how much of it they're getting
  • Anyone avoiding gluten, corn or yeast

Who should not take this

The manufacturer's caution, word for word: For occasional use only. This product contains Cape Aloe (Aloe Ferox). Do not use this if you develop diarrhea or abdominal pain. Consult your health professional if you have frequent diarrhea (DO NOT USE IF PREGNANT). Nursing mothers should contact their health professionals.

That pregnancy line is not a "check with your doctor" line. It says do not use. If you are pregnant, this is not the product for you, full stop.

It is also the wrong product if you need help every day. Constipation that is your normal, rather than an occasional problem, deserves a conversation with your provider about the cause, not a nightly capsule. Super Aloe is formulated for adults.

If you're not sure whether this fits your situation, Holistic Health Partners offers a free product consultation. We don't want you to buy more supplements. We want you to buy the right ones, and for a lot of people with a slow gut, the right one is fiber.

How does Super Aloe 450 Ortho Molecular compare to Super Aloe 250 and fiber?

Covenant carries Super Aloe 450 Ortho Molecular, its 250 mg sibling, and several fiber supplements. They solve different problems, and here is how they line up.

Super Aloe 450 (Ortho Molecular)Super Aloe 250 (Ortho Molecular)Psyllium or other bulk fiber

Safe to use every day?No. Occasional use onlyNo. Occasional use onlyYes, for most people, which makes fiber the clear winner for daily use
SpeedTaken at bedtime; Ortho Molecular describes it as fast-workingSameGradual; works through steady daily use

The honest read. If your slow gut is a weekly or daily fact of life, fiber is the better tool, and Super Aloe is the wrong one. Fiber works with your colon rather than prodding it, and it is meant to be taken every day. Our guide to how psyllium works as a bulk-forming fiber is a good starting point, and Fiber Formula by Integrative Therapeutics is one practitioner-grade option.

If your problem really is occasional, Super Aloe earns its place, because fiber is a slow fix and won't do much for you on the second night of a road trip. Between the two strengths, the 250 mg capsule is the same ingredient at a little over half the dose. If 450 mg turns out to be more than your body needs, and loose stools the next morning are the sign, the 250 is the natural step down. Your practitioner can help you decide which to start with.

How should I take Super Aloe 450 Ortho Molecular, and when?

The label says 1 capsule at bedtime (allow 24 hours before redosing) or as recommended by your health care professional.

Bedtime is not arbitrary. Because the active compounds have to travel to the large intestine and be converted by bacteria before they do anything, a capsule taken at night has done most of that traveling by morning. Taken in the morning, the effect could arrive at a much less convenient point in the day, at work or behind the wheel.

The 24-hour rule is the part people break. If nothing has happened by the next morning, the temptation is to take another capsule at lunch. Don't. Give the first one a full day. Doubling up is how a gentle nudge becomes cramping and urgency.

Ortho Molecular does not specify taking it with or without food. Drink water through the day, though. The capsule works partly by pulling water into the stool, and that works better when you are not running dry, which is a real risk on a long drive when you're rationing rest stops.

A useful check: 100 capsules at occasional use should last a long time. If you find yourself reordering every few months, Super Aloe has quietly become a daily habit, which is not how the label says to use it, and it is worth a conversation with your provider.

What won't Super Aloe 450 do?

This is the section most supplement pages leave out.

It won't fix chronic constipation. It is labeled for occasional use. If you need it most nights, the answer is to find out why, not to keep taking it.

It isn't a colon cleanse or a detox. Some reviewers describe it that way. Ortho Molecular doesn't. What it does is help move stool along on a night when things have stalled. That's all, and that's useful enough.

It isn't aloe vera juice in a capsule. If you were hoping for the inner-leaf gel people drink for general wellness, this is a different part of the plant doing a different job.

It won't replace fiber, water and movement. Covenant's own product page says it plainly: it should not replace foundational digestive habits. For Gus, a walk around the truck at every fuel stop will probably do more over a year than any capsule.

It isn't for diarrhea-prone or sensitive guts. The label tells you to stop if you develop diarrhea or abdominal pain. If your gut tends toward loose stools or cramping to begin with, this is probably not for you.

Don't buy it for the inflammation line. Ortho Molecular's product sheet says anecdotal evidence suggests Cape aloe supports a normal inflammatory response in the gastrointestinal tract. "Anecdotal" is the manufacturer's own word, and it is an honest one. Buy it for regularity, which is what the label is built around.

And one more: a sudden change in your bowel habits that lasts, blood in the stool, or severe abdominal pain is a reason to call your doctor, not a reason to try a supplement.

Is Super Aloe 450 Ortho Molecular safe?

The manufacturer's caution, word for word: For occasional use only. This product contains Cape Aloe (Aloe Ferox). Do not use this if you develop diarrhea or abdominal pain. Consult your health professional if you have frequent diarrhea (DO NOT USE IF PREGNANT). Nursing mothers should contact their health professionals.

The side effects to expect are the ones that follow from how it works: loose stools, diarrhea, cramping, abdominal discomfort and urgency. Because it increases stool frequency and draws water and electrolytes into the bowel, using it more often than directed can affect your fluid and electrolyte balance. That is the practical reason behind "occasional use only."

NCCIH adds two points worth knowing before your first capsule: oral aloe latex can cause abdominal pain, cramps and diarrhea, and oral aloe in any form may be unsafe during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

As with any supplement, consult your healthcare provider before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.

Is Super Aloe 450 Ortho Molecular worth it?

For the right person, yes. Super Aloe 450 Ortho Molecular is one ingredient, 450 mg of Cape aloe, from a practitioner brand candid enough to say how thin the published research is. It does one job: helping an occasionally sluggish colon move, overnight, without a multi-herb blend to decode. It suits travelers, people whose routine has been knocked sideways for a few days, and anyone who wants a single-botanical option for the nights when water and fiber haven't been enough.

It doesn't suit anyone who is pregnant, anyone with a diarrhea-prone gut, or anyone who needs help every day. The honest trade-off is that the same mechanism that makes it work overnight is the reason you can't lean on it. For daily regularity, a fiber supplement or a probiotic such as Ortho Biotic is the better long-term conversation to have with your practitioner.

Gus ordered one bottle. Rita made him promise it lives in the glovebox, not the cupholder, and that he'll call her if he's reaching for it more than once a week.

FAQs

Is Super Aloe 450 a laxative?
In practice, yes. Ortho Molecular states that Super Aloe 450 is intended for the relief of occasional constipation, and its Cape aloe works by drawing water into the stool and stimulating contractions in the large intestine, which is how stimulant-type botanical laxatives work. That is why the label says it is for occasional use only.
How long does Super Aloe 450 take to work?
Ortho Molecular describes it as fast-working but does not give an exact time. The label says to take 1 capsule at bedtime, because the active compounds must reach the large intestine and be activated by gut bacteria first. Allow 24 hours before taking another capsule, even if nothing has happened by morning.
Can I take Super Aloe 450 every day?
No. The label says it is for occasional use only. If you find you need help with regularity most days, talk with your health care provider about the cause, and ask whether a daily fiber supplement is a better fit.
What is the difference between Super Aloe 250 and Super Aloe 450?
Only the dose. Both contain Cape aloe (Aloe ferox) as the single active ingredient, at 250 mg or 450 mg per capsule, and both carry the same directions: 1 capsule at bedtime, allowing 24 hours before redosing. If 450 mg produces loose stools, the 250 mg version is the usual step down. Your practitioner can help you choose.
Is Cape aloe the same as aloe vera juice?
No. Drinkable aloe products are usually made from the inner-leaf gel or decolorized leaf extract, processed to remove anthraquinones. Cape aloe is the dried residue of Aloe ferox leaf liquid and is valued for those anthraquinones, which are what support bowel regularity. The two are not interchangeable.
What are the side effects of Super Aloe 450?
The most common are loose stools, diarrhea, cramping, abdominal discomfort and urgency. Stop using it if you develop diarrhea or abdominal pain. Do not use it if you are pregnant, and nursing mothers should contact their health professional first.
