Lorraine Bettencourt is 53 and has been a court stenographer for twenty-six years. Since last weekend, a sticky note from her sister, a nurse, has been stuck to her refrigerator. It reads Botanicalm PM Ortho Molecular, underlined twice, and Lorraine has walked past it every morning without doing anything about it.
On a good day she writes 225 words a minute, and on most nights, somewhere around eleven, her fingers are still moving. They tap out fragments of the afternoon's testimony against the duvet while the rest of her lies still and waits for sleep. It used to arrive within ten minutes. Lately it takes an hour, sometimes more, and she is less worried about it than worn down by it.
Botanicalm PM by Ortho Molecular Products is a melatonin-free evening capsule that combines five calming ingredients: valerian root extract (450 mg, standardized to 0.8% valerenic acids), jujube seed extract (200 mg), L-theanine as Suntheanine (150 mg), passionflower extract (150 mg, standardized to 3.5% flavonoids), and hops strobile extract (100 mg). Ortho Molecular formulates it to induce the relaxation needed to support better sleep in adults with temporary sleeplessness, and says it is especially suited to people who have trouble falling asleep because of restlessness. The dose is 2 capsules one hour before sleep. A 30-capsule bottle covers 15 nights; a 60-capsule bottle covers 30. Do not take it if you are pregnant or nursing.
What is Botanicalm PM Ortho Molecular?
Botanicalm PM is an herbal sleep formula built around one specific problem: a nervous system that is still running at daytime speed when the lights go off. Ortho Molecular's explanation centers on GABA, the brain's main calming neurotransmitter. GABA activity is supposed to rise in the evening and help start the sleep cycle. Stress, long days, and overstimulation can blunt that shift, and the five ingredients in Botanicalm PM are chosen to support GABA activity so the body can actually relax.
What it leaves out matters as much as what it contains. There is no melatonin in this formula. Melatonin is a timing signal: it tells the body that night has arrived. Botanicalm PM works on a different question, which is whether you are calm enough to drift off once you are in bed. Those are different problems, and people often grab the wrong tool for the one they have. Ortho Molecular lists three clinical applications for the formula: it supports restorative sleep, helps induce relaxation, and supports a positive mood.
Ortho Molecular sells only through licensed healthcare practitioners. At Covenant Health Products, that means you register for free clinic access before you can order, rather than adding it straight to a cart. The payoff is a fully disclosed label. Each of the five actives has a stated amount, and both the valerian and the passionflower are standardized. Run the numbers and the valerian delivers about 3.6 mg of valerenic acids per serving, while the passionflower provides roughly 5.25 mg of flavonoids. A retail valerian blend that just says "proprietary calming blend, 800 mg" gives you no way to make that calculation.

What's in Botanicalm PM Ortho Molecular, and how does each ingredient work?
Two capsules of Botanicalm PM supply the five ingredients below. The other ingredients are a vegetable capsule, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide. The formula contains no gluten, yeast, artificial colors, or artificial flavors.
Valerian root extract (450 mg)
Valerian is the backbone of the formula and the most researched ingredient in it. Its best-known active compound is valerenic acid, which Ortho Molecular describes as working on GABA from two directions: it slows the reuptake of GABA, so the neurotransmitter stays active longer, and it stimulates GABA release in the central nervous system. Other compounds in the root bind to GABA receptors directly. Valerenic acid also has muscle-relaxing properties, which suits someone whose body feels as tense at bedtime as their mind does.
Standardization is the detail to watch. Valerenic acid content varies a lot from one batch of raw root to the next, so an unstandardized product can deliver noticeably different amounts from bottle to bottle. Botanicalm PM sets it at 0.8%. One practical note that has nothing to do with chemistry: valerian root smells strongly, a bit like old socks, and some people notice it when they open the bottle. That is normal for the herb, not a sign that anything has gone off.
Jujube seed extract (200 mg)
The seed of the wild jujube, known in traditional Chinese medicine as suan zao ren, has been used for centuries as a calming herb for people who are tired, irritable, and still unable to sleep. Ortho Molecular attributes its effects to compounds called jujubosides A and B. The manufacturer is also candid that most research on these compounds has been published in China, in Chinese. That is useful to know: jujube's place in this formula rests more on long traditional use than on a stack of English-language trials.
L-theanine as Suntheanine (150 mg)
L-theanine is an amino acid found in green tea leaves. It is the reason a cup of tea can leave you calm and alert at the same time rather than jittery. Ortho Molecular classes it as a relaxant, not a sedative, when used alone. Its documented effect is an increase in alpha brain wave activity, the EEG pattern linked to a relaxed but awake state. A small 2008 EEG study published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that L-theanine increased alpha activity in healthy volunteers. In a bedtime formula, that matters for the person whose mind keeps replaying the day. Suntheanine is a branded, purified form of the L-isomer of theanine.
Passionflower extract (150 mg)
Ortho Molecular uses the aerial parts of the passionflower plant, meaning the leaves, stems, and flowers that grow above ground, standardized to 3.5% flavonoids. Those flavonoids are thought to be the active components, and they bind to GABA receptors. Traditionally, passionflower was used for exactly the kind of overstimulation and scattered thinking Lorraine describes. Ortho Molecular also points to research suggesting passionflower may help adults whose sleep quality goes up and down from night to night.
Hops strobile extract (100 mg)
Yes, it's the same plant used to brew beer. Only the female flowers, called strobiles, are used, and herbalists have long relied on them for their relaxing properties. Hops is almost always paired with valerian, and there's a reason. Ortho Molecular cites a pilot study of 30 people with mild-to-moderate sleep difficulty in which a valerian and hops combination, taken 30 minutes before bed, reduced the time it took to fall asleep and the time spent awake during the night. One honest footnote: that study used 500 mg of valerian and 120 mg of hops. Botanicalm PM provides somewhat less of each, 450 mg and 100 mg. It is the same pairing, not an identical dose, and Botanicalm PM adds three other calming inputs on top of it.
Who should consider Botanicalm PM Ortho Molecular?
- An adult who lies down tired but can't switch off, whose problem is the first hour in bed and not the hours after it.
- Someone whose evenings run hot: late shifts, a demanding caregiving schedule, or a job where you hold a lot in your head until the minute you leave.
- People who have tried melatonin and felt groggy the next morning, or who would rather not take a hormone. Botanicalm PM contains none.
- Anyone who already takes a valerian capsule, a theanine capsule, and a passionflower tincture separately and would rather take one product.
- A person whose practitioner has suggested "something herbal to help you wind down" and wants a formula with every dose printed on the label.
Who should not take Botanicalm PM?
- Do not consume this product if you are pregnant or nursing. That is the manufacturer's label warning, word for word. Consult your physician for further information.
- Anyone taking a prescription sleep medication, a benzodiazepine, or another sedative should talk to their prescriber first. Calming herbs can add to those effects.
- People who drink alcohol in the evening. The combination can make you sleepier than you expect.
- Anyone who needs to drive, operate equipment, or be fully alert within a few hours of taking it.
- Children. The formula is designed for adults.

How does Botanicalm PM Ortho Molecular compare to Cerenity PM and melatonin?
Ortho Molecular makes three evening products that people tend to confuse: Botanicalm PM, Cerenity PM, and a plain melatonin. They are not interchangeable, because each one addresses a different reason for poor sleep.
| Botanicalm PM | Cerenity PM | Melatonin (Ortho Molecular) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Approach | Botanicals plus L-theanine | Amino acids, PharmaGABA, phosphatidylserine, minerals | Single hormone |
| Key ingredients | Valerian, jujube, L-theanine, passionflower, hops | 5-HTP, PharmaGABA, phosphatidylserine, taurine, calcium, magnesium | Melatonin, 1 mg |
| Contains melatonin? | No | No, but supplies 5-HTP, a building block the body converts toward melatonin | Yes |
| Dose | 2 capsules, 1 hour before sleep | 4 capsules, 1 to 2 hours before bed | Per label |
| Best fit | Restless, can't switch off, slow to fall asleep | Stress-driven sleep trouble, including waking during the night | Body clock out of sync: jet lag, shift changes, late sleep timing |
| Where it wins | No hormones, fewest capsules, standardized botanicals | Broader formula that also addresses the nighttime stress response | Cheapest and simplest when timing is the real problem |
Melatonin wins in one situation, and we should say so plainly. If you can't fall asleep because you just flew in from three time zones away, or your shifts rotate, melatonin addresses the actual problem and Botanicalm PM does not. It's also the least expensive option on this list.
Cerenity PM is the better pick when stress is the engine behind the sleep trouble, especially if you wake up in the middle of the night, because Ortho Molecular built it to address the cortisol side of the stress response. It contains 5-HTP, though, so anyone taking an antidepressant or other medication that affects serotonin needs to clear it with their prescriber first. Botanicalm PM is the simpler of the two melatonin-free options: two capsules, plant-based, aimed squarely at getting to sleep in the first place. If you'd like a fourth point of comparison, we've also covered Insomnitol by Designs for Health, another practitioner-grade sleep formula.
How much Botanicalm PM should I take, and when?
The label dose for Botanicalm PM Ortho Molecular is 2 capsules one hour before sleep, or as recommended by your health care professional. A 30-capsule bottle holds 15 servings. A 60-capsule bottle holds 30.
The hour matters. It gives the ingredients time to be absorbed before you lie down, so the calming effect is building while you brush your teeth rather than catching up an hour after you've started staring at the ceiling. If you're in bed at 10:30, take it at 9:30.
The label doesn't say whether to take it with food. In practice, a heavy meal right before bed slows absorption and can also make sleep worse on its own, so most people do best taking it on a light stomach or with a small snack.
Give it a fair trial. Take it consistently for two to three weeks, and keep a simple note of how long it took you to fall asleep each night before you decide whether it's working. One good night or one bad night tells you very little. Take your first dose on an evening when you don't have to be up early, so you can see how you feel the next morning.
Botanicalm PM also works better when the rest of the evening is on its side. No caffeine after noon, a dim room, the phone in another room, and a consistent wake time will all do some of the work for it. Some people pair it with a magnesium supplement in the evening; our guide to Ortho Molecular Reacted Magnesium covers that option.
What won't Botanicalm PM do?
Every sleep supplement page lists the benefits. This is the other list.
It won't fix a body clock problem. If you're wide awake at midnight because you've slept until ten every day this week, the fix is light and timing, not valerian.
It isn't built for waking at 3 a.m. Ortho Molecular positions the formula for difficulty falling asleep due to restlessness. If you fall asleep easily but wake up and can't get back to sleep, a different approach may suit you better.
It isn't meant for sleep apnea or anything else that needs a diagnosis. Loud snoring, gasping at night, morning headaches, or real daytime sleepiness after a full night in bed are reasons to see a doctor, not reasons to try an herbal blend.
It won't cancel out a 4 p.m. coffee. Caffeine lasts for hours in the body, and no amount of passionflower will outrun it.
And it won't keep working as a long-term crutch for a problem that keeps getting worse. Botanicalm PM is designed for temporary sleeplessness. If you still need help most nights after a couple of months, it's time for a broader conversation with your practitioner about why.

Is Botanicalm PM Ortho Molecular safe? What are the side effects and interactions?
The manufacturer's label carries one warning: Do not consume this product if you are pregnant or nursing. Consult your physician for further information.
Beyond the label, a few points are worth knowing.
Additive sedation. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements valerian fact sheet notes a theoretical risk of additive sedative effects when valerian is combined with alcohol or sedative drugs such as benzodiazepines and barbiturates, and with other herbs or supplements that have sedative properties. Botanicalm PM contains four calming botanicals plus L-theanine, so if you already take a prescription sleep aid, an anti-anxiety medication, a sedating antihistamine, or another calming supplement, talk to your prescriber before adding it.
Side effects. The same fact sheet lists headache, dizziness, itching, and stomach upset as the most commonly reported effects in valerian trials, though people taking placebo reported similar effects. Some people feel a little sleepy the following morning, which is why it makes sense to start on a night with no early commitments. A small number of people find valerian oddly stimulating instead of calming. If that's you, this isn't your formula.
Driving and alertness. Don't drive or do anything that requires full alertness after taking Botanicalm PM.
Anyone with a known sensitivity should review the other ingredients: vegetable capsule, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide.
As with any supplement, consult your healthcare provider before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.
Is Botanicalm PM Ortho Molecular worth it?
For the right person, yes. Botanicalm PM makes the most sense for an adult whose sleep problem is getting to sleep, whose mind or body is still running when they lie down, and who wants a plant-based, melatonin-free option with every dose on the label. The standardized valerian and passionflower and the pairing of valerian with hops are genuine strengths, and two capsules is a small nightly commitment.
It makes less sense if your real issue is body-clock timing (melatonin is cheaper and more direct), if you mostly wake in the middle of the night, or if you're already taking sedating medication. The trade-off to weigh is cost per night: at two capsules a serving, the 30-capsule bottle lasts just over two weeks. If you settle on it, the 60-capsule size is the more sensible buy.
We don't want you to buy more supplements. We want you to buy the right ones. For Lorraine, that means first asking herself one honest question. Is the problem that she can't fall asleep, or that she can't stop working? The sticky note that says Botanicalm PM Ortho Molecular can stay on the refrigerator until she has an answer.
