Quick answer: UltraFlora is Metagenics’ family of probiotics, and each formula is built around specific, named strains for a specific person, so the right one depends on who is taking it. For children 3 and older, UltraFlora Kids is a grape chewable with 10 billion CFU of L. acidophilus NCFM and B. lactis Bi-07 per two-tablet serving, taken once a day and kept refrigerated. Adults who want the same two strains in a capsule can use UltraFlora Balance; the rest of the line is built for more specific goals.
| Form | Grape-flavored chewable tablet (natural flavor; sweetened with xylitol and sorbitol) |
| Serving and dose | 2 tablets = 10 billion CFU combined of L. acidophilus NCFM and B. lactis Bi-07 (guaranteed at expiration) |
| Servings per container | 30 two-tablet servings in a 60-tablet bottle |
| Who it suits | Children 3 and older who can chew a tablet completely, under adult supervision |
| Take it with/when | 1–2 tablets once daily; chew or crush fully; store in the refrigerator |
| Price and details | $45.95 for 60 tablets: see UltraFlora Kids Probiotic |
The grape tablets live in the butter door of the Ferreira-Lund refrigerator now, between the capers and a jar of horseradish nobody admits to buying. Getting them there took three weeks. Ingrid Ferreira-Lund, 42, schedules surgeries at a regional hospital and plans everything, so when another parent at Saturday swim lessons mentioned her son’s chewable probiotic, Ingrid went home and opened the Metagenics page. Nine bottles called UltraFlora. She closed the laptop, then booked a free product consultation and brought a list of questions before she bought anything.
Her questions are probably yours, so here are the answers.
The bottle her six-year-old ended up with is UltraFlora Kids Probiotic, the only UltraFlora® formula from Metagenics® made for children. It pairs two of the most-studied probiotic strains in a chewable tablet, and it is the starting point for understanding the rest of the line, because the adult starter formula uses the same two strains.
What is UltraFlora, and how is the lineup organized?
UltraFlora is Metagenics’ probiotic line, and it is organized by person and purpose rather than by strength. Every formula lists its strains by name and code (NCFM, Bi-07, GR-1 and so on), and most guarantee the CFU count at expiration rather than at manufacture. That naming matters more than it looks. The international consensus definition of a probiotic is a live microorganism that, given in adequate amounts, confers a health benefit on the host, and the panel behind it stressed that the term should be tied to specific, characterized strains (Hill et al., 2014).
So when you shop the UltraFlora line, read the strain list first and the big number second. The lineup splits into four groups: a children’s chewable, everyday adult capsules (Balance, Complete, Spectrum, BiomePro), women’s formulas (Complete Women’s, Women’s), and specialty products (Night Rest & Digest, which is a heat-treated postbiotic, and a fiber powder).
What’s in UltraFlora Kids Probiotic, and what does each ingredient do?
Each two-tablet serving of UltraFlora Kids Probiotic contains 107.8 mg of a probiotic blend providing 10 billion CFU in total, from two strains:
- Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM. A named Lactobacillus strain. It is one half of the blend and supports a healthy intestinal environment.
- Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07. A named Bifidobacterium strain that complements NCFM. The same two strains appear together in the adult UltraFlora Balance capsule.
The 10 billion figure is the combined count, not 10 billion of each. It is guaranteed at the expiration date when the bottle is stored as directed, which for this product means refrigerated. Metagenics positions the formula to support digestive and immune health.
The rest of the tablet: xylitol, natural flavors, sorbitol, microcrystalline cellulose, carrot and hibiscus juice for color, DL-malic acid, citric acid, vegetable stearic acid, vegetable magnesium stearate and silica. Each serving has 5 calories and 1 g of sugar alcohol. There is no added sugar on the label.
About the research behind the pairing: NCFM alone and NCFM combined with Bi-07 were studied in a six-month, placebo-controlled trial of 326 healthy children aged 3 to 5 during the winter months (Leyer et al., 2009). That trial gave the strains twice a day as a powder, not as this chewable, and strain research describes the ingredients, not a promised result for any one child.
How do you take UltraFlora Kids?
Children 3 and older chew one to two tablets once a day, or as your child’s practitioner directs. The tablets must be chewed or crushed completely; they should never be swallowed whole.
| Question | Label answer |
|---|---|
| How much | 1–2 chewable tablets once daily (2 tablets = the full 10 billion CFU serving) |
| Minimum age | 3 years; not recommended under 3 because of choking risk |
| How | Chew or crush completely; adult supervision |
| With or without food | The label doesn’t specify; pairing it with the same meal each day makes it easier to remember |
| Storage | Refrigerate |
| How long a bottle lasts | 30 days at 2 tablets a day; 60 days at 1 tablet a day |
| Upper limit | The label maximum is 2 tablets once daily unless a practitioner directs otherwise |
The label doesn’t set a trial period. A practical approach is to give it a few weeks of daily use before you and your child’s practitioner decide whether it is earning its spot in the fridge. Consistency matters more than the time of day.
Which UltraFlora formula fits each adult in the house?
Match the bottle to one goal. Here is the adult lineup as Covenant Health Products carries it, with label facts per serving:
| Formula | Strains and CFU | Label dose | Who it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| UltraFlora Balance | NCFM + Bi-07; 15 billion CFU | 1 capsule, 1–2 times daily | First-time adult users; the grown-up version of the kids’ strains |
| UltraFlora Complete | 9 strains; 36 billion CFU; plus vitamin D 600 IU, thiamin, riboflavin | 1 capsule daily | Adults who want a broad blend and don’t already take much vitamin D |
| UltraFlora Spectrum | 7 organisms incl. Saccharomyces boulardii; 30 billion CFU | 1 capsule daily | Adults who want a probiotic yeast in the mix |
| UltraFlora BiomePro | 8 strains; 105 billion CFU | 1 capsule daily | Experienced users a practitioner has moved to high potency |
| UltraFlora Complete Women’s | 5 strains incl. GR-1, RC-14, DDS-1; 23 billion CFU | 1 capsule daily | Women who want vaginal-flora and gut support in one capsule |
| UltraFlora Women’s | GR-1 + RC-14 (50:50); 2 billion live organisms | 1 capsule daily | Women who want the two urogenital strains only |
| UltraFlora Night Rest & Digest | Heat-treated B. longum ES1 25 mg + asafetida, enzymes, milk thistle | 1 capsule with the evening meal | Adults who want after-dinner digestive comfort (a postbiotic, not live cultures) |
| UltraFlora Fiber Prebiotic & Probiotic | 4 g fiber (PHGG, tapioca) + Bacillus coagulans IS-2, 2 billion CFU | 1 scoop in 8–10 oz liquid, 1–2 times daily | Adults short on fiber who want support for regularity |
For a parent who has never taken a probiotic, UltraFlora Balance is the easy pairing: the same NCFM and Bi-07 strains as the kids’ chewable, at 15 billion CFU in a vegetarian capsule, from $25.95 a bottle. And if the household already has UltraFlora Kids in the fridge door, one look at the strain lines makes it clear why Balance is the adult match.
Who is UltraFlora Kids for, and who should skip it?
It suits children 3 and older who can chew a tablet thoroughly, whose parents want daily probiotic support for digestive and immune health alongside a varied diet. The chewable format helps children who can’t or won’t swallow capsules.
Skip it, or ask first, if:
- Your child is under 3. The label says it is not recommended because of choking risk. For toddlers, a powder made for that age is the safer format (see the comparison below).
- Your child can’t reliably chew. Crush the tablet completely or choose a powder.
- Sugar alcohols bother your child. Xylitol and sorbitol can cause gas or loose stools in some people, particularly in larger amounts.
- You have a dog. Xylitol is dangerous for dogs, according to the FDA. Store the bottle where a pet can’t reach it, which the refrigerator conveniently handles.
- Your child is seriously ill, has a weakened immune system, or is under ongoing medical care. Talk with the pediatrician before giving any probiotic.
- You can’t keep it cold. Long trips without refrigeration put the CFU guarantee at risk.
Mild gas in the first days is the most common thing parents notice with any probiotic, and it usually settles. If it doesn’t, or if your child seems uncomfortable, stop and check in with your provider.
How does UltraFlora Kids compare with other children’s probiotics we carry?
The real choice is format and age. Here is UltraFlora Kids next to a children’s powder from Pure Encapsulations® and the adult capsule that shares its strains:
| UltraFlora Kids | Pure Encapsulations Probiotic 123 | UltraFlora Balance | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Form | Grape chewable tablet | Unflavored powder, mixed into applesauce or yogurt | Vegetarian capsule |
| Ages | 3 and older | 1 and older | Adults |
| Strains | NCFM, Bi-07 | La-14, L. rhamnosus GG, Bl-04, Bb-06 | NCFM, Bi-07 |
| CFU per serving | 10 billion (2 tablets) | 1.5 billion (ages 1–3, ½ scoop); 3 billion (4+, 1 scoop) | 15 billion (1 capsule) |
| Servings | 30 per 60 tablets | 162 full scoops per 60 g | 30 per bottle (larger sizes available) |
| Storage | Refrigerate | Cool, dry place | Cool, dry place or refrigerate |
| Price on CHP | $45.95 | $27.00 | From $25.95 |
| Best for | Kids 3+ who like a chewable | Toddlers, kids who won’t chew, dairy- and soy-free households, the lower-cost option | The parent who wants the same strains |
Choose UltraFlora Kids when your child is 3 or older and a flavored chewable is the thing that actually gets taken every day. Choose Pure Encapsulations Probiotic 123 for a child between 1 and 3, a child who won’t chew, or a family that wants a four-strain powder at a lower price per serving. Neither is the “better” product; they solve different problems.
Does a higher CFU count mean a better probiotic?
No. CFU tells you how many viable organisms are in a serving, not whether they are the right ones for the job. A systematic review and meta-analysis of 228 trials found that probiotic results are both strain-specific and goal-specific: one strain can show an effect where a close relative of the same species does not (McFarland et al., 2018). The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements makes the same point for shoppers: higher CFU counts don’t necessarily mean a product is more beneficial.
That is why the 105 billion CFU in BiomePro doesn’t make it the default for anyone, and why the 2 billion in Women’s isn’t a weakness. Pick the strains built for the person, then follow the label dose.
Do UltraFlora probiotics need to be refrigerated?
Only some of them. UltraFlora Kids says to refrigerate, full stop, so its home is the fridge. BiomePro states that no refrigeration is required. Balance and Spectrum say a cool, dry place or the refrigerator. Complete and Complete Women’s say to keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dry place. Whatever the formula, heat and humidity are the enemies, so skip the windowsill and the car’s glove box, and close the lid after every dose.
Is UltraFlora right for your family?
It can be, as long as each person gets the formula built for them rather than the biggest number on the shelf. For a child 3 or older who will happily chew a grape tablet, UltraFlora Kids Probiotic keeps it simple: two named strains, 10 billion CFU, once a day, from the fridge. For younger children or non-chewers, a powder fits better. For the adults, start with the goal and let the strain list decide. If you would rather not sort nine bottles alone, that is exactly what a free consultation is for.
